Homeostasis and Why Your Body is the Smartest Doctor You Know

Understanding Homeostasis

The human body is smart. So smart it knows what your optimum temperature is and has an in-built water-sprinkler to cool you down whenever you overheat.

It knows when to release insulin to convert sugar into energy and has a state-of-the-art sanitation system to rid your body of excessive toxins. It controls the excretion and retention of fluids, and the release of hormones that keep your bones and skin strong and your nervous system in balance.

It knows how to absorb nutrients from food to power you through the day. It has a preference for certain types of foods. If you eat too much of the wrong foods, it gets sick and bloated, disrupting your sleep and causing you to gain weight, a cycle that is difficult to break once it begins.

It can spot foreign potentially dangerous cells and zap them with healthy cells to prevent viruses or tumors from forming and growing. In the right environment, it can repair itself when damaged.

You are unaware of these processes when they happen. Your body is not dependent on you understanding these functions in order to make them happen. Your body is pre-programmed to function optimally. That programme is called Homeostasis.

Homeostasis is a complex communication system between organs and organ systems, which enables your body to maintain a steady internal environment to ensure its optimal function.

Your body is constantly striving to maintain homeostasis but the system is not impervious to attack. Communication breakdowns do occur and when that happens you know because you get sick.

A classic example is Type 2 Diabetes. Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that enables cells to use glucose for energy. Every cell in your body needs glucose. Insulin opens the cell allowing the glucose to enter. If your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or uses it inefficiently, blood sugar levels can get too high or too low.

Type 2 Diabetes begins with insulin resistance that can be brought on by lifestyle factors, which is why exercise and eating habits can reverse it. Exercise and healthy foods are one way you help your body maintain homeostasis.

Connection to Nature

Another way you can help the body to maintain homeostasis is by taking a supplement. In the last twenty years the market for natural supplements has exploded proving how hungry we are for natural healthcare solutions.

However, there’s a plant that’s been used as a remedy for all sorts of ailments for millions of years and is a known curative. That plant is Cannabis Sativa.

The discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the late 1980s shocked the scientific and medical communities, and illustrated how much is yet to learn about the physiology of the human body and its primal connection to nature.

The ECS is a complex communication system that communicates through every organ and tissue in the body. Scientists then discovered how cannabinoids interact with two existing receptors in the body: CB1 and CB2.

CB1 receptors are found in various locations including the brain, spinal cord, thyroid, liver, adrenals, ovaries or testes while CB2 receptors are found in the lymphatic and immune system, spleen, thymus and tonsils. Both CB1 and CB2 receptors are present in the eyes, stomach, heart, pancreas, digestive tract and bone.

These receptors bind with endocannabinoids (made by body internally) and/or cannabinoids (ingested by the body from external source such as marijuana or hemp.)

The cannabinoids found in marijuana and hemp are called phytocannabinoids (meaning they come from a plant) and some scientists believe humans evolved to take these plants as sources of medicine to maintain health.

Evidence demonstrates how tweaking the ECS affects a range of diseases and conditions from mood and anxiety disorders, movement disorders such as Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, neuropathic pain, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury to cancer, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, stroke, hypertension, glaucoma, obesity and osteoporosis, to name a few. 

Recent experiments on mice demonstrated how CB1 receptors regulate appetite, metabolism and body weight so effectively it may be possible to use cannabis to treat obesity.

Hemp and Homeostasis

Put simply, disease is the loss of homeostasis. Following the discovery of the ECS, scientists began to isolate and study the compounds in cannabis more closely and uncovered the unique way they work in harmony with the body to maintain homeostasis.

Phytocannabinoids not only correct dysfunctions, they are also known to supercharge the effects of cannabinoids in the body. One of the unique features of phytocannabinoids is their ability to communicate both ways between presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons, which is crucial for restoring balance when homeostasis is lost.

It’s important to note that the phytocannabinoids in marijuana and hemp are different and have different effects on the body. The main phytocannabinoid found in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol. The cannabinoid in hemp is called cannabidiol.

While tetrahydrocannabinol binds with ECS receptors and has a psychoactive effect, it’s not fully understood how cannabidiol works but it is known it’s non-psychoactive (meaning it won’t get you high), non-toxic (meaning you can give it to your dog or child) and has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Unfortunately, hemp gets confused with its sister marijuana, landing it in a leading quagmire and preventing people from accessing its powerful, natural, healing properties.

So far, hemp’s cannabidiol has been shown to have a long list of benefits. It’s an anti-anxiety, antiemetic, anticonvulsant, antipsychotic, antioxidant, anti-tumoral, anticancer, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory.

It treats Alzhemier’s and repairs neuron damage. It provides pain relief, treats PTSD and opiate addiction. It helps with energy regulation, autoimmune disease, neuropathy, reproduction function and appetite. It’s been shown to be lifesaving for epilepsy and cancer patients.

Many of the effects of cannabidiol are holistic, meaning they’re similar to the effects of lifestyle change such as a change in diet or exercise. People who take it report all sorts of benefits from pain relief to a general sense of wellbeing.

Who Can Take Hemp Oil?

Everyone. However, your ECS is as unique as your fingerprint, meaning you’ll have to experiment a little to find the right dosage for you. Don’t worry, hemp oil does not make you high and is non-toxic so there’s no risk of taking too much. We recommend starting with between 2ml and 4ml per day.

It’s likely you’ll notice an immediate difference in mood or energy levels. After a few weeks, you may notice you’re sleeping better and inclined to eat healthier foods. Because you have more energy, your mood improves and you’re motivated to exercise.
